Lumolingo
About Lumolingo

Babies don’t learn a language.
They build one.

That distinction quietly undoes a piece of advice the language-learning world keeps repeating — and it is the reason this app starts where it does.

You have heard the advice. It shows up in every thread, every comment section, every well-meaning reply to someone who is struggling:

“Be exposed to it like a baby. Forget grammar. It’ll come.”

It sounds good. It also misses something basic.

A baby has no alphabet in front of them, no concepts, and no other language to compare against. They build a system from nothing — and at that age their brain is set up for exactly that job. Nobody explains anything to a baby, because there is nothing yet to explain it with.

An adult stands somewhere completely different.

What the research actually says

A 2018 study published in Cognition, drawing on data from 669,000 people, found that the ability to absorb grammar without being taught it holds up until around 17.4 years old, and then declines steadily.

That does not mean adults cannot learn. Adults learn languages all the time, and many reach a level a child never would.

It means something narrower, and more useful: “learn like a baby” leans on precisely the ability that has faded.

The source, and the honest caveat

Hartshorne, Tenenbaum & Pinker (2018). “A critical period for second language acquisition: Evidence from 2/3 million English speakers.” Cognition, 177, 263–277.

A 2021 re-analysis argued the decline is more gradual than a sharp cut-off at 17.4. That debate is about the shape of the curve, not its direction — the mechanism still weakens with age, which is the only part this argument rests on.

So what does an adult have instead?

A language they already know. The ability to reason. Pattern recognition. The capacity to compare one thing against another and notice why they differ.

Which leads somewhere strange. We ask adults to learn using the faculty that has weakened, and we tell them not to use the ones that have grown. We ask them to put down their sharpest tool before they start.

An adult who is told “don’t think about it, just absorb it” has been handed the one instruction their brain is worst equipped to follow.

I noticed this in Italy

I moved to Italy without speaking Italian, and I had to learn it. Not as a hobby, not for a trip. At a counter. In a government office. In front of a doctor. In front of a person waiting for me to say something, while I stood there with nothing to say.

So I did what everyone does. I downloaded the apps.

None of them started at the beginning. The first lesson already assumed I knew something. Words to memorise, thrown at me with no rule behind them and no reason given. When I got one wrong, it told me I was wrong and moved on. It never told me why.

It did not work. And it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that this was not my fault.

I went through forums. I watched what language teachers were posting. And I found the same question everywhere, asked by people who sounded exactly like me — the same frustration, the same suspicion that they were being sold a shortcut that did not exist. Plenty of people had noticed the problem.

Nobody had sat down and built the thing.

So I built it

In the evenings, after work, alone. It took months, and there were long stretches where it was clearly a bad idea.

It is called Lumolingo, and it starts at the first letter. The alphabet. What each letter sounds like. Your first real sentence. Every word can be tapped to hear how it is actually pronounced — in that language’s own voice, not an approximation in your accent.

And before it asks you to remember anything, it tells you why. Because once an adult brain has the reason, it stops needing to memorise every individual example. That is the whole argument, turned into an app.

Where it is now. A1 is finished in Italian, German and English — from the alphabet through to your first conversations. A2 is being written. B1 is planned.

The interface is in 12 languages, on purpose: you should not need English first in order to learn German.

Who is behind it

One person. I am not a company, and there is no team behind this. I am an independent developer living in Italy, and Lumolingo is what I made because I needed it and it did not exist.

That has consequences, and I would rather say them out loud than have you find out later. It moves at the speed one person can move. When something breaks, it breaks until I get to it. There is no support department — there is an email address, and I read it.

It also means there is nobody above me asking for engagement metrics. Nothing in the app is designed to keep you there longer than you need to be. The goal is that one day you do not need it any more.

Start at the first letter.

The first two lessons are open to everyone. No card, no trial countdown.

Her başlıkta, her yorum bölümünde, zorlanan birine verilen her iyi niyetli cevapta karşımıza çıkıyor:

“Bir dile bebek gibi maruz kal. Gramerle uğraşma. Zamanla oturur.”

Hartshorne, Tenenbaum & Pinker (2018). “A critical period for second language acquisition: Evidence from 2/3 million English speakers.” Cognition, 177, 263–277.
